A new draft of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's "Digital Identity Guidelines" takes steps to eliminate harmful password management practices, such as requiring users to periodically change their passwords. The recommendations, mandatory for US federal government entities and serving as guidelines for others, also ban "composition rules" like requiring a mix of capital letters, numbers, and punctuation marks, as these practices often lead to weaker, more formulaic passwords.
